Forever Flower

Est. Market Size - $ 26 B.

PRODUCT CONSTITUENT

  •     Ornamental live potted flowers that will continually product petals.

  •     Plant food that contained the chemical inducer to the gene promoter that control the flowering genes.

TECHNOLOGY

This product idea relates to the following patent seen below and the following journal article.

Flowering genes

United States Patent: 7,157,279                                                            January 2, 2007

Abstract:          The cen gene of Antirrhinum (snapdragon) has been cloned, also

homologues from Arabidopsis (tfl1) (mustard) and rice. Flowering characteristics of transgenic plants, especially switching of apical meristem to a floral fate and the timing of flowering, may be manipulated by regulating gene expression. The promoter of the cen gene may be used to drive tissue-specific expression, specifically in the apical meristem of plants.

“TFL1 ectopic expression in transgenic plants resulted in prolonged growth in both vegetative and reproductive phases, implying TFL1 could affect plant growth in all developmental stages.”  Mimida et al., (2001) Genes to Cells 6, 327-336

PRODUCT CONCEPT – From the information seen above and the growing number of plant genomes sequences that have been completed, it is clear that an ornamental flowering plant could be constructed in which flowering could be extended or made perpetual.

A living Forever Flower would always have petals, always be colorful.  Depending upon the plant, it would always have scent.  No need for new cut (dead) flowers.  No need to worry about what to do with the boring just green potted plant.

Of course, once someone purchases the Forever Flower why would they buy another one?

Another way of putting it, “How does the supplier make money?”

The best way I can think is to make the genes under some inducer control and sell the Flowering gene inducer as a consumable.

MARKET SIZE – Est. $26 B.

Orchids already last a long time.  They are now the most popular ornamental plant.

Making about one third of the world-wide market.  About $25B world-wide.

Just the materials for orchid plant maintenance is $2 B.
