Corporate Job Descriptions
Looking the Part
An important aspect of job titles for a start-up company is for external use.
Money people need to see that there is an experienced, qualified individual responsible for these "Traditional Roles". Meaning experienced people that know what they are doing.
Corporate Officers
There are the Company Officers, the C_ _s:
These are more ceremonial and make folks feel good. It is why everyone uses them now. Even high schools have CEO's now. But if it makes people feel good about your company and you do it.
And the Company functional positions:
In public corporations the President is elected by the Board of Directors (BOD) and is held responsible for the implementation of BOD directives and orders.
The President handles the daily management of the corporation.
The President defers to the BOD on matters of policy.
The Secretary is responsible for maintaining the corporate records
The Treasurer manages the corporate bank accounts and funds. The BOD dictates the actual policy.
Mostly these days upper management has two titles, such as CEO and President or President and COO.
Titles
It is true though, in a small, fast moving business, titles don't actually mean much. There is just so much to do, everyone works. Whoever is closest to the work does it. It has to be that way for the start-up company to survive.
But Titles are good ways to make people feel appreciated when you have no money to pay them more. Titles are cheap. Just make a new set of business cards. That's about $30 - $40 depending upon where you get them printed.
