 THE TEAM ETHIC:

Managing Right

Fairness is Inherent

Even the lowest level of primate has a fairness behavior, a set of social rules of equality.  Equal pay for equal work turns out to be part of all primate social constructs.  Primate troops are teams.  Humans are primates.  Humans companies need to work are teams.

Small companies, especially, need a team effort to succeed.

Leave behind the Dad is always right analogy.  Leave behind the Myth of the Alpha male.  They are both illusions.

If the female in the monkey troop don't like the head (Alpha) male.  They get a new one.  If he won't go they'll beat on him until he goes; alive or dead.

Hierarchy does not give permission for bullying.  Excessive use of force from the top is nothing useful.  It is only destructive to a small business.

Your employees know that you can fire them.  Reminding they of that fact does nothing but generate anger and discontent.  Any smart person would look for another job immediately.  Yes.  You do need smart people in your company.

Your company is much more than a family.  It is much more than ego-gratification or a life-style choice for the Founder.  It is a vehicle of commercial survival.  It needs care and maintenance just like a sports car.  Otherwise, it breaks down and leaves you stuck on a dark road, wet, cold and alone.

Managing = Team-building

Managing and Team-building are one and the same thing.  A good manager provides his / her direct reports with everything they need to get their jobs done.

That means:

  •     Adequate Training.

  •     Proper and Thorough Direction.

  •     Emotional and Financial Support.

  •     Encouragement / Discouragement.

  •     Protection from Above and Below

  •     Information about the Company and its Future.

Simply assigning projects and then walking away is a commonly utilized technique, but it is not managing.  It is handing off responsibility.  You have also thrown your future to the wind.  If things work out it isn't you.  It is the person or team member the project happened to stick to.

If you find yourself complaining that you "can't find good employees."  Look in the mirror.  Actually, the Company "can't find good managers."

The Problem is You

You have bad employees?

  •     You hired them.

  •     You trained them.

  •     You gave them their projects.

  •     You gave them their schedules.

  •     You approved their work.

You are the common factor here.  You are the problem, not them.

Managing a team of professionals is difficult.  It's hard work.  It is a relationship effort.  It is team-building.  It is personal and professional.

If you don't know how your employees think.  It is your problem.  How can you provide them with the information they need if you don't know if they understood you?

Most people can learn anything if it is explained in words that they know.

There are a few folks that don't fit in the team structure.  Clear them out A.S.A.P.  Otherwise, get to work.
